Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, generally classified as a B-complex vitamin. After the initial discovery of biotin, nearly forty years of research were required to establish it as a vitamin. Biotin is required by all organisms but can only be synthesized by bacteria, yeasts, molds, algae, and some plant species. Biotin has also been known by its alternate names of, vitamin H, coenzyme R, and vitamin Bw.
Biotin deficiency is rare and has a variety of causes including, but not limited to, consumption of raw egg whites, excess alcohol or caffeine consumption, anticonvulsant medications, and antibiotic usage. Predisposing conditions include two hereditary disorders, Biotinidase Deficiency and Holocarboxylase Synthetase (HCS) Deficiency, both of which require biotin supplementation. The rapidly dividing cells of a developing fetus require biotin for DNA replication and synthesis of essential carboxylases, thereby increasing biotin requirement during pregnancy.
Mammals are incapable of 100% biotin absorption and for this reason, must consume some biotin to replenish the biotin which has been lost in excretion. Biotin deficiency is characterized by baldness, muscle pain, mild skin disorders including a gray dry skin, lack of energy or extreme exhaustion, poor appetite, mental health disorders including depression, and insomnia. For good health, it is important to eat a balanced and varied diet. Follow carefully any diet program your health care professional may recommend and keep in mind that cooking and preserving foods severely reduces their biotin levels.
